We didn't have enough time to develop an innovative route. The route of this 16th edition is very classic. Regulars will not find any originality there, except to tackle some climbs on the other side. It is, however, a superb loop. Sportingly, it is ambitious, and touristically, it gives a rich overview of the diversity of the south-Alpine landscapes.
We start riding through Haute Provence (Valensole and Albion plateaus) to Mont Ventoux, the summit of which is located at kilometer 190 of the route (ascent via Sault - the easiest of the three).
Then, we head north along the small, quiet roads of Baronnies, then Diois (cols d’Ey, de Soubeyrand, de Prémol). On the border between Drôme and Isère, the discreet Col de Menée (1402 m, already used in 2012) will take us into the Trièves. Then, head east (Beaumont, Champsaur, Haute-Durance); we progress towards the highest part of the Southern Alps.
At Col Agnel (2744 m, highest point of the 1000 du Sud 2025), we are approximately halfway through and we pass into Italian Piedmont.
After 120 km ridden in Italy, we return to France via Col de Tende, from which we hope to be able to descend the 46 bends, a dizzying downhill into the Roya valley. The opening of this legendary road (itself in good condition, comprising 4 km unpaved which can be ridden with a road bike) is conditional on the opening of the tunnel below, to which the construction site is currently blocking access. Many times postponed, this is promised for 2025; if this is not the case, we will descend via the Baisse de Peyrefique and Castérino (as in 2023), a very nice variant, also accessible by road bike.
Kilometers 700 to 900 are quite daunting, as is everything in or near the Alpes Maritimes. The Cols de Brouis, Turini, Colmiane, Sinne, Saint-Raphaël and Saint-Barnabé follow one another... and it is better to have saved a little energy for getting over them.
Finally, the last 100 kilometers, mainly downwards, bring us back to the base via pleasant roads well known to regulars (Castellane, Comps-sur-Artuby, Châteaudouble, Ampus, Tourtour).
